Higher gas prices are incentivizing people to consider electric vehicles and Tesla is the most popular name among EV brands. While many people consider buying a Tesla to get away with the painful gas prices or to reduce harm to the environment, some still prioritize accessibility and convenience. Speaking about convenience, are you too curious to know about how long it takes to charge a Tesla electric car? Here is what you need to know about Tesla’s charging prices, battery options and other variables involved in determining its charging time.  

Tesla Charging by Charger Type

The charging time of Tesla depends entirely on where you are charging your car battery and what car model you are using. There are three types of charging stations that vary by level. Each level comes with a different set of characteristics but remember, higher the level, faster the charging time.

Level 1 chargers are the most basic and convenient ones that you receive once you purchase the vehicle. It has a capacity of around 1.9kW and takes around 32 hours to charge.
Level 2 chargers are 5 to 7 times faster than the normal Level 1 chargers. They have a capacity of 19.2 kW and can be plugged into a 240 V outlet.
Level 3 charging stations use DC and 480-volt units and are the fastest charging options. It can charge your battery to full in just 30 minutes.

Tesla Charging by Model Type

Most Tesla models can charge up to 80% in about 15 minutes on a Tesla Supercharger. However, each specific model takes different time to charge depending on the battery size, vehicle configuration, and age of battery pack.

Tesla Model 3

It can range up to 358 miles on a full charge.

Supercharger or Level 3 charger: On a 250kW charger it takes 15-20 minutes to charge 80%. On a 150kW charger, it can take up to 40 minutes to charge 80%.

Level 2 charger: 8 to 12 hours to charge fully.
Level 1: It can take up to 3 days if the battery is depleted.

Tesla Model Y

It can range up to 330 miles on a full charge.

Supercharger or Level 3 charger: It takes 15 to 20 minutes to charge 80% on a 250kW charger and up to 40 minutes on a 150kW charger.

Level 2 charger: 8 to 12 hours to charge fully.
Level 1: 3 to 4 days if the battery is depleted.

Tesla Model S

A Tesla model S offers a range of up to 405 miles if fully charged.

Supercharger or Level 3 charger: It can take 30 to 40 minutes to charge 80% on a 250kW charger. On a 150kW charger, it can take up to 60 minutes.

Level 2 charger: 12 to 20 hours for a full charge.
Level 1: It can take 4 to 7 days if the battery is depleted.

Tesla Model X

It can range up to 348 miles on full charge.

Supercharger or Level 3 charger: Tesla Model X can take 30 to 40 minutes to charge 80% on a 250kW charger and up to 60 minutes on a 150kW charger.

Level 2 charger: 12 to 20 hours to charge fully.
Level 1: Up to 7 days if the battery is depleted.

It depends upon the charger type and how far have you driven since the last recharge. Tesla model 3 comes with a 7.7-kW/32-amp onboard charger and doesn’t charge as quickly on Level 2. On Level 2 charging, it can add up to 30 miles of range per hour. If connected to a supercharger, Tesla model 3 can add about 200 miles range in less than 15 minutes.

Based on the national average cost of electricity, it costs around $15.52 to charge a Tesla. Model 3 costs $10.95 to fully charge. Whereas, model Y costs $14.39 for a full charge. Model S and Model X cost $17.83 and $17.99 respectively on an average to charge fully. However, the cost of charging depends upon the type of charging station. 

How long does it take to charge a Tesla at ChargePoint?

Tesla come with a J1772 adapter that is used for opportunity charging at slow chargers. A 120 volt outlet will supply 2 to 3 miles of range per hour of charge. Whereas a 240 volt outlet can supply up to 30 miles of range per hour of charge.
