Much harm has been caused by the lack of privacy of information in the online channel and tremendous convenience in the delivery of services. The chaos has created an opportunity for both innovation and bad actors to flourish. It is now time to put in place better controls that reduce friction and raise mitigation.
In order to get there, we need collaboration from private organizations (i.e., financial institutions, telco’s, utilities, etc.), the public sector (vital stats, DMV, etc.), and the general public (both visionaries and early adopters). We need the public and private sectors to work on both the issuance and consumption of digital credentials. The issuance of authenticated users (general public) of documents/credentials into secure digital wallets for reuse by the owner of the credential.
