His nuanced view on the strategic management of perils that might be addressed by insurance products and creative risk transfer drove the establishment of Janus Assurance Re.
The CEO Views recognizes his unwavering commitment to making the company a mission-driven carrier committed to risk engagement and out-of-the-box underwriting, awarding Constantin with the title of one of the ‘Most Inspiring Leaders to Watch 2025.’ This brief narrative provides insight into his leadership journey, the challenges that he has overcome, and his undeniable contribution to earning Janus’s reputation among its peers.
An Introduction
Founder and Chairman of Janus Assurance Re, C. Constantin Poindexter’s background is anchored in a world of uncertainty. Having earned a Master’s degree in intelligence, graduate certificate in counterintelligence, and former employment in the intelligence field, the breadth and depth of Constantin’s understanding of global risk complexities have been an invaluable asset to his view of insurance. Transitioning to the financial services sector, he applied his perspective to the reinsurance and surety space to the formation of Janus Assurance Re.
Janus Assurance Re: An Overview
Janus Assurance Re is a reinsurance and specialty insurance provider domiciled in the Dominican Republic. It operates globally with an affinity for the Caribbean and Latin American markets. Janus addresses consumer needs for which standard insurance carriers have little appetite. It is guided by the principle, “If you wish to be successful in the insurance business, you have to go where the risk is.” The company has earned a reputation for bespoke underwriting, offering terms for non-standard, unique risks and agile execution. As Janus expands its geographic footprint, its influence grows but not at the loss of underwriting discipline.
A Strategic Leadership
“My leadership can be described as ‘This is how we love on our clients,’” adds Constantin. He considers his leadership style to be strategic, mission-oriented, and unquestionably pro-consumer. Initially, he adhered to a traditional ‘command and control’ model, that directives be set at the executive and managerial levels and followed by subordinates. However, his opinion has evolved. Today, ALL Janus team members are ‘decision-makers’. Janus adheres to a leadership philosophy that emphasizes mentorship, accountability, and highly distributed control. Constantin believes in empowering underwriters and CSRs so long as they are adhering to the company’s values, mission, and, most importantly listening to the voice of the customer.
Challenges that Taught
Establishing Janus without the aid of outside capital demanded disciplined cost control, unparalleled resolve to create a viable surety company with personal resources, and a strategy to acquire market traction quickly. Janus’s willingness to provide solutions to clients that are not appropriately serviced by standard markets is part of this strategy. Building an insurance company ‘from the ground up’ was a lesson in the importance of hiring people of character and unparalleled curiosity toward learning and growing, and more specifically in Janus’s specialty products. Constantin admits, “Moving from the agency world to the insurance carrier level required me to sharpen some unused skills. There was a learning curve. I think that the most important lesson for me was about the importance of getting the right people on the bus. One’s team makes or breaks you. They have to be collaborators but most of all they all have to be fanatically focused on the customer.”.
Building Trust and Ensuring Compliance
Constantin believes affinity is a characteristic of trust. Janus’s clients develop a sincere connection to the enterprise, largely due to its team’s effort to actively listen, educate clients about what might work for their risk profile, then communicate solutions to the client in a clear way. By stressing operational excellence, Janus has cultivated a loyal clientele. Insureds trust the company, trust its underwriters and trust its products. Each interaction with a stakeholder is characterized by the development of that trust.
Innovation as a Bedrock
Says Constantin, “Innovation is not really about novelty. It’s about offering a solution and if a product doesn’t address the customer’s need, then it is an opportunity to create something new. THAT is how a carrier keeps its clients coming back. We look at ways to avoid saying ‘no’. Often that requires thinking outside of the box.” This view on innovation is part of Janus’s core strategy to remain relevant for the next twenty years or more, rather than one of mere survival by chasing premium revenue.
Constantin rewards pragmatic innovation and client-centric improvements in Janus’s offerings, leveraging technologies such as AI and novel data analytics. He encourages and rewards team members for proposing tactics and strategies that solve real problems in underwriting, claims, and client engagement. In his approach, insurance serves a social good. Innovation focused on service to others is central to Janus’s mission regardless of what that might contemplate.
Embracing Diversity and Inclusivity
For Constantin, diversity is more than a checkbox. It is a strategic advantage. Eighty five percent of Janus’s underwriting and client service staff is made up of women and minorities. Constantin prioritizes diverse recruitment and supports upward mobility for underrepresented talent, both internally and through his charitable foundation. Janus’s team rightfully reflects its multicultural operating environment. As inclusion breeds empathy and with is cohesion. Constantin views these attributes as imperative for the company’s long-term success.
Future-Proofing Janus
Future-proofing requires foresight, adaptability, capital, and underwriting discipline. Janus offers financial support for its team members’ pursuit of university degrees and insurance-specific continuing education, the latter being obligatory. Janus has robust producer, MGA, co-insurer, and reinsurer partnerships. “We have invested a lot of resources in technology that enhances our ability to make it easier for the Team to deliver.” says Constantin. Janus is market-bold but not at the cost of sloppy underwriting.
Bequeathing Legacy and Advice
Constantin’s desired legacy for Janus Assurance Re is that of a cornerstone institution in surety and specialty risk, rooted in the principle that true leadership is service to others. His advice to aspiring leaders? “Study deeply, take advantage of every opportunity to learn, and enhance your competency in the subject matter.”
Constantin asserts that the insurance space rewards those who are comfortable with ambiguity, to be ‘at home’ with uncertainty. It is a business in which risk should be seen not necessarily as a threat but rather an in invitation to find a way to manage risk. He encourages future insurance professionals to lead with conviction, build something that outlasts themselves, and help others reach their goals.
I am hyper-focused on Janus’s reputation for courage; courage to underwrite when others retreat, to serve where others overlook, and to lead when others will not. The only thing that you should be focused on is the voice of the customer.
