As an inevitable cornerstone of advancement, growth, equitable access, and optimized delivery of services, innovation in healthcare has gone beyond the boundaries of just developing revolutionary medicines or medical devices. Under its substratum, healthcare has been witnessing significant transformations in all its aspects over the last few decades.

With disruptive technologies standing at the frontier of these transformations, healthcare organizations are gradually embracing and integrating them into their operations to deliver accessible, high-quality, and patient-centric care to their patients. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is one of the most unprecedented and promising technologies of the last decade, reshaping the healthcare landscape and redefining healthcare delivery. The smart artificial intelligence applications introduced in the healthcare realm have changed and continue to change the way medical care is delivered, enabling healthcare innovation to gain new ground.    

An Evolving History: Healthcare Innovation

Before 1960, the history of healthcare quality was a fragmented collection of unrelated events. From quality improvement to technology incorporation, the history of healthcare innovation is defined by remarkable events that changed its course. Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen discovered X-rays in Germany, marking the beginning of technological integration as a medium of driving healthcare innovation. Gradually, with technologies such as radiology, A-B-C technique, CPR, and the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), healthcare delivery witnessed dramatic changes in adopting technology and innovation.

Despite the significant advancements in technology made over the last two centuries, it remained a problem for those who did not receive the care they needed and for those who needed to pay for it. Healthcare is one of the fastest-moving industries, and developments in life sciences have revolutionized people’s understanding of diseases, the challenges of aging, and how people can handle them.

The interest in disruptive innovation shifted towards simpler and affordable technological solutions, moving services away from expensive hospitals to community settings. Technological innovation has great potential to improve the performance of healthcare systems and health outcomes for individuals since the very first era of technological integration into the healthcare system. Technologies such as big data, AI, innovative medical devices, and new products are playing an instrumental role in modernizing healthcare innovation.

Introduction of AI in Healthcare

A rise in life expectancy led to a growth in healthcare costs. According to statistics, the total healthcare cost is projected to rise from $ 8.4 trillion in 2015 to $ 18.3 trillion in 2030. Such a surge in cost creates pressures on governments and healthcare providers, demanding a major change in the healthcare system in the near future. With an increase in healthcare spending, a surge in the number of health-conscious people looking for reduced spending has been witnessed. This is where technology came into play to transform the interaction between the patient and the healthcare system.

Artificial intelligence in healthcare has its origin in the 1950s when physicians used computer-aided programs to improve diagnoses. However, interest and advances in medical AI applications have soared in recent years due to the enhanced computing power of modern computers and the substantial amount of digital data available for utilization. As it continues to change medical practice, there are various artificial intelligence applications that are used in clinical, rehabilitative, diagnostic, predictive, and surgical practices.  

How AI-Powered Applications are Maneuvering Healthcare Innovation?

Healthcare innovation has taken a new turn with the indomitable power of artificial intelligence. It is identified as an emergent enabling technology that can unleash multidisciplinary innovation. AI systems can work more efficiently for longer hours compared to human workers. Healthcare organizations are unlocking AI-powered innovation to address staff shortages, financial constraints, and increased demand pressures. According to medical experts, AI has the scope to address the time-honored deficiencies in healthcare and improve patient care.

This technology can enhance medical devices, working in synergy with robotics technology to amplify the scope of their iterative improvements. Due to its ability to foster innovation in medical devices, networks, and other care pathways,  the implementation of artificial intelligence applications requires a sustainable introduction.

A Statista report for 2024 has stated that approximately 8% of US healthcare organizations have their budget allocated to AI projects, which is 300% more than in previous years. Another 13% mentioned having increased their AI-project budgets between 100 to 300 percent during this period. These statistics reveal the significance of AI adoption in driving healthcare innovation to a large extent.

Artificial intelligence applications can ingest, analyze, and report large volumes of data to detect diseases and guide clinical decisions. From identifying new drugs for health services management to redefining research protocol, AI has been driving healthcare innovation in unprecedented ways.
