THE BESPOKE BANKER

Conceived in the aftermath of the Great Recession and shaped by firsthand observations of how the lending landscape evolved—particularly following the implementation of Dodd-Frank—The Bespoke Banker represents a thoughtful response to structural change within the middle-market lending ecosystem.

As a middle-market lending advisory firm, The Bespoke Banker is dedicated to helping companies optimize, manage, and strengthen their lending relationships. By bridging the gap between borrowers and financial institutions, the firm delivers relationship-driven advisory services grounded in deep industry insight and long-standing lender relationships. Founder Matthew Salmon shares with The CEO Views how The Bespoke Banker is reshaping middle-market lending advisory, earning recognition as one of the Best Companies of the Year 2026.

The Creation

As regulatory requirements expanded following Dodd-Frank, banks and financial institutions increasingly redirected time, attention, and capital toward governance, risk management, and compliance. In practice, this created what many lenders came to view as a new “fourth pillar” of lending—compliance—alongside origination, underwriting/credit, and portfolio management.

While the intent of stronger oversight was clear, the operational consequence was a meaningful reduction in resources devoted to traditional credit apprenticeship and on-the-job training. Junior lenders had fewer opportunities to learn through repetition, mentorship, and deal exposure, while senior lenders spent increasing amounts of time navigating process and documentation requirements.

Over time, this shift contributed to an industry-wide talent pipeline challenge. As seasoned lenders retired or moved on, fewer well-trained successors were positioned to step into complex, relationship-driven lending roles. The Bespoke Banker was built in direct response to this gap—bringing disciplined credit thinking, relationship-based judgment, and practical lender fluency to borrowers who require a knowledgeable advocate in an increasingly process-driven environment.

Excellence in Lending

The Bespoke Banker delivers comprehensive middle-market lending advisory services tailored to each client’s specific needs. These services include reviewing and improving existing lending relationships; mediating loan modifications, renewals, and special requests; sourcing and mediating financing placements; and conducting ongoing assessments of lending structures with financial institutions.

The firm also develops short- and mid-range financing strategies aligned with growth projections, tracks loan covenant compliance, coordinates reporting between a company’s finance team, CPAs, and lenders, and performs additional advisory functions as circumstances require.

Matthew Salmon: The Man at the Helm

Founder Matthew Salmon brings more than 20 years of experience across commercial and middle-market lending, with a career spanning underwriting, portfolio management, origination, and product specialization.

He entered the industry through an internship in 2005 with a lower middle-market boutique lender on Park Avenue in New York City. After being hired for a full-time position, Matthew helped build a new C&I lending division from inception, contributing to the development of lending policy and credit frameworks.

Following the institution’s failure in 2010—driven by a distressed commercial real estate portfolio—Matthew continued his lending career with the acquiring bank, assisting in the transition and rebuilding of the portfolio. After a brief attempt to launch an advisory platform earlier in his career, he returned to banking to further deepen his experience, including time with a community lender based in Newburgh, New York.

Matthew later joined Israel Discount Bank (IDB), where he served for nearly five years as a middle-market portfolio manager before being recruited into business development as a product specialist. In that role, he originated solutions across the capital structure—including ABL and factoring—and emerged as one of the bank’s top performers.

After a short tenure in micro-VC as Head of Investor Relations, Matthew returned to his core strength: advising businesses through complex lender relationships. In 2021, he formally launched The Bespoke Banker—an idea conceived years earlier—and secured the firm’s first client within its first month of operation.

Dodging the Bullets

“Early challenges included determining how to properly value and price the firm’s advisory services and assessing whether there was a market willing to pay for them,” Matthew explains.

Establishing credibility with lenders and fostering more open, collaborative dialogue was another early hurdle. As demand accelerated, the firm also navigated operational challenges related to managing client inflow, building a small but highly trained team, and ultimately restructuring after an initial partnership proved limiting.

Staying Ahead of the Curve

The Bespoke Banker operates in a category of its own. It is not a broker, workout consultant, or turnaround specialist. Instead, the firm provides ongoing advisory and relationship management that few others offer—leveraging insider experience and trusted lender relationships.

Its unique value proposition combines deep insight into lender decision-making, a bespoke advisory model, and long-standing personal relationships across the lending industry.

Driving Agility

The Bespoke Banker remains agile by leveraging AI and technology where appropriate to enhance due diligence, analysis, strategic planning, and communication.

The firm also maintains continuous engagement with the lending community through industry events and direct dialogue with lenders—ensuring real-time awareness of shifting credit appetites, institutional movements, and market dynamics.

Shaping Lending Advisory’s Future

Two major trends are shaping the future of lending advisory. First, AI is increasingly influencing credit and advisory work by accelerating analysis, improving diligence, and enabling faster, more informed decision-making—while still requiring experienced judgment to interpret results and manage lender relationships.

Second, the industry faces a growing gap in credit training and a shortage of next-generation lenders as seasoned professionals retire. The Bespoke Banker stays ahead by leading through example: investing in rigorous internal training, applying disciplined credit thinking, and using AI tools thoughtfully to enhance—not replace—human expertise.

“The Bespoke Banker serves its purpose by delivering highly personalized, relationship-driven advisory services rooted in deep industry expertise.”
— Matthew Salmon, Founder
