Javier Menendez’s Inspiring Path
In 2011, Javier Menendez established the International Business Management Institute (IBMI), a Business School with the goal of creating successful professionals in Latin America. It was founded with limited savings and some money from the sale of a car. Despite the lack of financial support, he was determined to make his dream a reality. He sought the endorsement of a university, and although the project was seen as fragile and unstable, he gained the trust of the CEO of Bircham International University. After going through the necessary processes and sacrifices, IBMI started its operations in a small location with minimal furniture. Classes began with just a few students, but over time, IBMI expanded its academic offerings and attracted adults who needed flexible study schedules.
Javier Menendez’s life mission is to make a positive impact on the people he interacts with, even if he can’t change the world. In Latin America, many students start studying at local universities but face challenges that prevent them from completing their degrees, mostly due to financial issues. Only 16% of students in Central America manage to finish their programs.
Menendez himself experienced these problems during his early years of studies, which motivated him to bring about change. He wanted to transform the way adult professionals approach education and pursue their academic dreams. However, there are very few institutes in Latin America that focus on helping adult students earn bachelor’s or master’s degrees.
More than 13 years ago, Menendez established his business school and searched for a university that would recognize the academic degrees offered by his school.
He wanted a university that prioritized quality in terms of requirements, education, and teaching, with a specific focus on adult higher education. He found all of these qualities at Bircham International University (BIU). Additionally, he received invaluable guidance from BIU CEO, Prof. William Martin, who helped him fulfill his mission and enabled many Latin Americans to study at Bircham Executive College.
Javier Menendez faced a major challenge when he started a small school. He needed to gain the trust of potential students and companies who were interested in in-company training. He knew that his education program was exceptional, but it almost seemed too good to be true. The education offered by Bircham International University was of high quality and came with a reasonable price. It was an excellent opportunity for anyone interested.

Javier just needed a few people to believe in his program, and fortunately, some did. After a couple of years, the university had graduated over 60 associates from one company, which opened doors for other companies to join. Now, the university has partnerships with several multinational Latin American companies who trust them with their education needs. These companies have realized the benefits of long term educational programs, such as Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees incorporated as in-company programs.
These programs not only deliver excellent results but also reduce staff turnover, increase employee commitment, and provide top-notch qualifications and skills for middle and top management positions. It is truly inspiring to see how Bircham Executive College has helped people succeed. In fact, some of their best graduates have even become part of the teaching staff, passing on their knowledge and mentoring others towards a successful life.
Javier Menendez credits his success mainly to listening, especially to his mentor William Martin, CEO of Bircham International University. In the beginning, he would ask for advice but not truly listen. He thought he knew better than anyone else, but he made costly mistakes and the business didn’t meet his expectations. However, he eventually decided to listen and started seeing positive results. Listening was crucial to his success as it allowed his team to become more competitive, improved student services, and helped him understand the needs of the students. New ideas often come from listening, even if they initially sound crazy. Thinking outside the box has been key to the success of Bircham Executive College.
Menendez’s close relationship with his students is one of the most significant accomplishments he believes. Each student has direct access to him, allowing them to reach out with any concerns, suggestions, or needs.
While he may redirect certain questions to the appropriate staff members, this access provides him with a continuous understanding of how things are progressing in class, at the market, and with the staff. Menendez believes that many companies face problems because they lack contact with their actual reality and lower levels of authority.
By establishing direct communication channels with students and staff, actively listening, and fostering a culture of trust, he gains a true understanding of his company’s reality.
Throughout his career as a speaker, coach, and consultant, Menendez has assisted numerous companies in overcoming various challenges. He applies this experience to help and mentor many students in their academic and professional pursuits, which he finds fulfilling. Helping others gives purpose to the countless hours he dedicates to his work.
Menendez’s Student-Centric Vision: Transforming Bircham Executive College
Menendez’s leadership style involves understanding the needs of his team and students, rather than solely focusing on results and company goals. He wants to ensure that the university is implementing change and helping students achieve their goals. The university is revolutionizing education by using a non-traditional approach to teaching. A good education should teach critical thinking, not just provide information.
Bircham Executive College caters specifically to mature professionals with clear goals. They design programs based on individual expectations and value previous education and experience. It is important to study what is needed, not what is already known. Classes at the college are centered around case studies and debate. The professors are working professionals in their respective fields, providing valuable insights. The theory is supplemented with readings at home.
The team has learned a lot from Bircham International University, although they focus on distance learning, while Bircham Executive College combines online learning with weekly class sessions for those who prefer a more interactive approach. Javier Menendez believes in establishing direct contact with students and staff, listening to their needs, and building a culture of trust to understand the reality of his company.
Menendez emphasizes that Bircham Executive College offers education specifically tailored to adult professionals.
The academic curriculum is personalized to meet individual needs and preferences. The college prioritizes flexibility to accommodate students’ family and work commitments. Unlike traditional evaluation systems, exams at BEC focus on achieving goals and completing projects, which significantly reduces stress. These factors alone guarantee academic and professional success for BEC graduates. However, there is another crucial factor to consider.
The admission interview at Bircham Executive College goes beyond fulfilling the entry requirements for the degree program. It serves as a comprehensive coaching session. Its focus extends beyond the student’s current goals. Over the years, he has observed that most people choose their major based on their current job, rather than considering their future aspirations.
The advantage of a personalized program is that the university can design a curriculum that addresses both current needs and future expectations. This approach yields the best outcomes for students’ university education. It has numerous success stories that support the effectiveness of this coaching and mentoring approach during the admission process.

Cultivating a Culture of Critical Thinking
Javier Menendez believes that success primarily depends on one’s attitude. Attitude is shaped by a combination of our innate abilities and the knowledge we acquire from various sources such as school, university, books, articles, and most importantly, thinking.
Nowadays, we spend too much time consuming information without giving enough importance to generating our own thoughts. Developing critical thinking skills should be the main objective of any exceptional university. This is exactly what the team at BEC and BIU strive to do.
The university’s motto is simple: “A good education should teach us how to think, not what to think.” Menendez’s mission is to make a positive impact on every individual he comes across.
The university serves as an excellent tool to achieve this mission. It creates a ripple effect of change among students, transforming their talents into practical skills, fostering a positive mindset to solve problems, and preparing them to develop common sense and critical thinking abilities.
“We are committed to fulfilling the needs of the adult professional students who choose not to attend a traditional on-campus university.
