In a world where gender inequality still persists, few women have defied the odds and left an indelible mark on their respective industries. Let us delve into the inspiring narrative of one such woman who has explored the intricate facets of entrepreneurship and emerged successfully. Ida Fanelli is a trailblazer in the holistic aesthetics industry. Starting her career as a Medical Laboratory Technologist, she walked through both positive and difficult times and never settled for less. Her career trajectory is marked by moments of resilience, tenacity and courage. Seizing every opportunity that comes her way, Ida is now redefining the realm of holistic skincare through her brand Esthetics by Ida.
Congratulations on being recognized as one of the ‘Women Inspiring Leaders of the Year 2024’. What inspired you to pursue a leadership role in this industry?
Thank you for considering me for this title. I am surprised and honored by the recognition. Well, I initially pursued a medical laboratory career, analyzing body samples for over 12 years. But the universe had different plans for me when I was downsized in 1993. A friend influenced me to participate in a reflexology program which eventually led me to learn aesthetics. The stress of being downsized affected my health, so I started getting the advice of a naturopath. He saw potential in me and encouraged me to learn the holistic skincare line Zanqara. That’s how my holistic aesthetics began.
I started writing articles for social media in health and aesthetics. I noticed that people were reading and liking my posts. In 2023, I started a blog on my website and Medium to expand my visibility. Brainz magazine noticed my Instagram page and invited me for an interview. Since September 2023, I’ve become an executive contributor for Brainz Magazine. I write informative articles on how my knowledge has helped my family with health issues and first aid. I also provide comparative analyses on different ingredients, offering consumers more information on their use. I’m also proud of a YouTube video I created that demonstrates sustainability, titled “How to Reuse and Recharge a ZeroWater Filter.”
That’s really inspiring how you transitioned from medical laboratory technology to entrepreneurship and carved out your own niche. How do you define your leadership style, and how has it evolved?
As a self-employed holistic aesthetician, I’ve never seen myself as a leader. The internet has given me the power to connect with others. I consider myself a kind-hearted leader who is willing to learn and share with others. Some people are surprised that I don’t charge for my advice, but I believe in giving back and helping others. Many of my blogs are inspired by questions from clients and or my own experiences.
This journey hasn’t been smooth. What challenges have you encountered and what lessons have you learnt?
Self-employment has many ups and downs. Managing appointment times are challenging and earning clients’ trust is critical. I also help my husband sell his honey, which adds to my responsibilities. He’s slowing down now, so I’m not interrupted as much. Without health coverage, I turned to holistic methods to maintain my well-being. I’ve dealt with some health issues over the past 30 years, and luckily, everything turned out fine. COVID-19 was my biggest challenge. The lockdown prevented me from working, but I took this opportunity to improve my home-based salon’s appearance and hygiene. Today, I perform the lymphatic drainage massage on myself daily and educate clients with respiratory issues on how to stimulate their own facial lymphatic system to prevent and relieve symptoms of respiratory illness. By the way, I’ve helped people’s colds improve by giving them a facial. The steaming and facial massage I do have proved to be beneficial.
You run a home-based holistic aesthetic medical spa. Can you please explicate in brief about the offerings?
I started with aesthetics and reflexology and now have added sugaring, energy healing, shellac polish, foot detox, IPL (laser), microcurrent, and light therapy. I offer competitive prices and provide good value with service and knowledge. I constantly update my website and use social media and email to inform clients of my offerings. I’m involved with some trade groups as well—businesses helping businesses. When you enjoy what you are doing, it doesn’t feel like work.
Name a woman who inspires you and provides you guidance to where you are today?
Madame Filion, the founder of my skincare product line, has been a significant inspiration. She’s always accommodating when I have challenging skincare situations. Her knowledge and guidance have been invaluable. Some skincare lines only teach the product, and I have pages and pages of information. I learned to understand products in the health food store and homeopathic remedies, which are helpful for first aid.
Do you believe diversity at the workplace impacts team performance? As a leader in your business, how do you engage and empower others?
Being a self-employed I work with a very diverse clientele. I’ve added the LGBTQ+ logo to my website to show everyone is welcome. Texting helps me connect with people who have hearing disabilities, and the phone translator function assists me when a client doesn’t speak English. It’s also interesting to hear from people from different cultures and perspectives. I learn a lot from my clients, and hopefully, they think the same of me.
How do you manifest your future life? What are your short-term plans and long-term goals?
I want people to appreciate the knowledge that aestheticians have. My profession has been belittled at times and I aim to raise the bar for aestheticians. This conversation feels like a manifestation of my goals as a home-based aesthetician being introduced to the world. I’m excited about future possibilities.
What are your advice and tips for aspiring women leaders, especially in your field?
Keep learning, and people will respect you for your expertise. Stay calm in adverse situations and pay attention to the signals life sends you. Change is often necessary sometimes.
