The field of oncology is witnessing a rapid evolution. Not only is screening for early detection becoming standard of care, but early treatment options are also becoming more precise.
Elucent Medical, a pioneering medical device company, is at the forefront of tackling a longstanding challenge in the field of oncologic surgery. By focusing on the patient care pathway in which disease is identified and treated through tissue sparing minimally invasive surgery. They harnness the power of precision navigation with innovative and effective Smart solutions. By enabling real-time guidance based on their revolutionary technology healthcare systems nationwide are reporting improved patient experience, while also improving healthcare outcomes and decreasing overall healthcare costs. Elucent Medical gave an account into how they are bringing a change in how precision oncologic surgery is delivered.
Story Of Origin
Elucent Medical is a company dedicated to improving cancer outcomes by arming surgeons with integrated surgical tools that provide intraoperative 3-D visualization. Currently, the Elucent system is being used predominantly for the surgical treatment of breast cancer. The early results demonstrate lower positive margin rates and removal of less normal tissue.
Improving patient outcomes and surgeon satisfaction is further enhanced by the design with the real-time guidance “navigation” added to the surgeon’s tools. Positioning a wireless SmartClip soft tissue marker using image guidance prior to surgery, visualization of the precise location for removal with EnVisio Real-Time Navigation throughout the surgery.
“We are passionate in our beliefs that empowering physicians with technology that integrates “precision guidance”, the outcomes for patients are greatly improved.” Jason Pesterfield; CEO shared.
We are passionate in our beliefs that empowering physicians with technology that integrates “precision guidance”, the outcomes for patients are greatly improved.
The journey for Elucent Medical has been tremendously rewarding, having provided guided surgical procedures for over 7500 patients through the second quarter of 2023. Early adopters of the EnVisio Navigation and SmartClip technology shared they have seen significant clinical improvements for their patients and welcome the innovation that enables a single platform to be used in treating the broad range of patients they see.
Partnering with physicians in every step of the journey brings the best of clinical practice, and engineering together to change how surgery is generally performed. Information and data collection further demonstrates that the need for surgical navigation is more than just a nice to have, it is a need to have.
Elucent continues to partner with physicians from all specialties to identify clinical needs, where technology can offer a cost-effective solution for patients, and healthcare systems.
The EnVisio Navigation System
The EnVisio™ Navigation System works by locating the precise coordinates of an embedded wireless SmartClip soft tissue marker that can be placed at the time of biopsy, or as a separate localization procedure. The SmartClip roughly the size of a grain of rice emits a unique signature that tells the surgeon exactly the precise location of the SmartClip. Surgeons and Radiologists can then define the tumor and desired margins for full removal. The ability to tell the surgeon the exact location of the tumor plus the margin are very valuable for removing cancer and other diseases or artifacts in soft tissues that often lack distinct anatomic landmarks, such as in the breast, lymph nodes, lung.
Transforming Patient Care
Breast Cancer is the second leading cause of death for women. 1 in 8 women will receive a breast cancer diagnosis in their lifetime. While surgery is the first line treatment, 25% of those patients will require a planned second surgery due to the lack of precise location. Taking less healthy tissue while ensuring the diseased tissue is removed is certainly what the medical teams desire.
Jason Pesterfield; Elucent CEO commented “The transformative potential of Elucent Medical’s approach has generated excitement and anticipation within the medical community. By providing a solution that targets the disease site with unprecedented accuracy, we are paving the way for more effective and patient personalized treatments”.
The tools for surgery are now changing. Innovation is delivering a solution to a real clinical need. EnVisio Surgical Navigation is providing that real-time guidance from the surgeon tool to the desired millimeter of margin so the first surgery is set up for success. This leads to faster recovery for patients, better quality of life, and decreases the financial burden on patients and healthcare systems.
The EnVisio Navigation platform by design enables more surgeries to be performed using minimally invasive, tissue sparing techniques to remove only the diseased tissue with precision millimeter accuracy, while leaving healthy tissue. This is described as an oncologic procedure “removal of the cancer” as well as oncoplastic resulting in less scaring, less complication, less need for additional surgeries.
As with any truly revolutionary technology, challenges are inevitable along the way. By embracing confidence and self-belief, one must strive to make the impossible, possible. That is the guiding philosophy for Elucent Medical. Building a collaborative team with the knowledge and experience is vital.

Embracing A Positive Work Culture
The culture of Elucent is intellectually curious. The team shares, “We embrace the belief that anyone can and should be able to ask questions even when they are not truly impacted by the answers. The culture is that of family and friends coming together to make the impossible, possible. To share in bringing impact to the world through each patient that is treated.
The visionary team of leaders at Elucent Medical recently shed light on their ground-breaking approach, recognizing the clinical need to deliver real-time guidance to surgical margin which further elevates how surgery is performed today. While their current technology is optimized for breast cancer surgery, Elucent has taken on the challenge to provide a solution that will enable thoracic programs to localize lung cancers and optimize real-time navigation for thoracic surgeons performing video or robotic assisted lung cancer surgery. Elucent’s management team shared, “In addition to the clinical benefits of our technology, our unwavering commitment to strong values drives our pursuit of exceptional business results, ensuring we create sustainability value for all stakeholders.
Jason Pesterfield; Elucent CEO shared his belief “With our focus on innovation, and patient-centric care, Elucent Medical is poised to reshape the field of surgical oncology. By bringing about this much needed integrated precision in surgical navigation, we are proving to be a catalyst for progress, enabling surgeons to have vital intraoperative guidance for tissue sparing surgery.
