Financial services have always been an industry that keeps moving. Today, however, the pace of change is faster than ever, with technology, regulation, and customer expectations constantly shifting. For leaders, keeping up is not enough. They also need to understand where the industry is heading and how those changes can genuinely benefit people and businesses. This is the approach Graziella Grech, Executive Director of FinPlus Europe has taken throughout her career.
Graziella’s leadership is built around trust, inclusion, and the belief that innovation should have a purpose. For her, technology is valuable when it solves real problems, makes financial services easier to access, and gives people a safer and more reliable experience.
Today, Graziella is helping lead the company’s expansion into the European market. Based in Malta and part of one of North Africa’s leading fintech groups, FinPlus Europe is currently working toward obtaining a Payment Institution licence from the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA).
Building a financial institution from the ground up is a major responsibility. It involves putting the right governance in place, preparing for regulatory requirements, building strong partnerships, and finding people who can help turn the vision into reality. Graziella’s role brings all these elements together as she works to establish FinPlus Europe as a trusted and customer-focused financial services company.
A Career Driven by Curiosity and Continuous Learning
Graziella’s interest in financial services comes from the fact that it never stands still. The industry plays an important role in people’s everyday lives and in the wider economy, yet it is constantly being reshaped by new technology, regulations, and changing customer needs.
Over the years, she has worked with regulators, international stakeholders, and industry leaders, gaining a practical understanding of how important collaboration and good governance are. These experiences have also shaped her view that companies need to be open to change without losing sight of honesty, transparency, and long-term value.
Learning has always been an important part of her career. Graziella believes that professionals in financial services cannot afford to stop developing their knowledge. What works today may look very different tomorrow, which is why she values curiosity and the willingness to keep learning. She completed an MBA at Henley Business School strengthening her understanding of business management and strategic leadership. She also earned the ACCA CertFinTech qualification, giving her a deeper understanding of emerging financial technologies and how they can be applied in financial institutions.
Her education is still ongoing. She is currently pursuing a Master of Arts in International Relations and Diplomacy with Lancaster University. For Graziella, this is about more than adding another qualification to her profile. Understanding global affairs, geopolitics, and economic developments helps her see the bigger picture and make better decisions in an industry that is increasingly connected across borders.
Building the Right Culture at FinPlus Europe
Graziella’s career has also taught her the importance of resilience, confidence, and being authentic. As a woman working in fintech, she has seen the challenges that can come with working in an industry where leadership roles have traditionally been dominated by men.
She has never allowed those challenges to define her. Instead, she has treated them as opportunities to learn and prove what she can bring to the table. This has shaped a leadership style that is straightforward and people-focused. She believes employees do their best work when they feel trusted, respected, and comfortable sharing their ideas.
That belief is particularly important as she helps build FinPlus Europe. Establishing a regulated financial institution is not something that happens overnight. It takes careful planning, strong governance, reliable partnerships, regulatory preparation, and a team that believes in what it is building.
For Graziella, the goal is not simply to create a company that delivers financial products. It is to build an organization with the right foundation to grow over time. The challenges that come with that process have only strengthened her belief in the value of patience, adaptability, and long-term thinking.
She also puts a strong emphasis on people. Technology may be changing financial services, but she believes talented and committed teams remain the foundation of any successful organization. She looks for people who are curious, accountable, honest, and willing to keep improving. At the same time, she believes leaders should give their teams enough trust and freedom to take ownership of their work.
Looking Ahead at the Future of Finance
Graziella sees a very different financial services industry taking shape over the next five years. Artificial intelligence is likely to have an even bigger role in areas such as customer service, fraud prevention, operational processes, and compliance.
Open Banking and Open Finance are also changing the relationship between consumers and their financial information. As people gain more control over their data, financial institutions will have more opportunities to work together and create new services.
Payments are another area where change is already visible. As digital payments become a more natural part of everyday life, there will be more room for innovation and greater financial inclusion. But Graziella believes the industry cannot focus on innovation alone. As technology develops, so do the risks.
Cybersecurity, data protection, and responsible use of AI will become increasingly important. Financial institutions will need to show customers that new technology can be trusted. In Graziella’s view, the companies that get this balance right will be the ones that make the biggest impact.
Supporting Women and Building a Lasting Legacy
Graziella is equally passionate about encouraging more women to consider leadership careers in financial services. She believes the industry is stronger when people with different experiences and perspectives have a seat at the table.
She hopes her own career can encourage more women to aim for senior executive and board-level roles. Her message is simple: confidence, continuous learning, and authenticity can open doors, even when the path is not always easy.
Looking ahead, Graziella does not measure success only by commercial results. She wants to contribute to a financial services industry that people can trust, one that is more inclusive and open to innovation. She also hopes to help develop future leaders who understand that the impact of a business goes beyond its financial performance. For Graziella, great leadership starts with a willingness to keep learning. That belief has shaped her career so far and continues to guide her work at FinPlus Europe. By staying curious, investing in people, and approaching innovation responsibly, she is working toward a future where financial services can serve people better while creating lasting value for businesses and society.
“Great leaders never stop learning. By embracing innovation responsibly, investing in people, and committing to lifelong education, I hope to inspire others to lead with integrity, purpose, and a vision for creating lasting positive change.”
