Suzanne Alfano has had an impressive career journey in the non-profit sector. With over 35 years of experience in various associations in Canada and the US, she has dedicated her life to improving electrical, fire, and life safety outcomes. Her career began with a diploma in Electronics Engineering Technology, which led her to work for a large association that developed Canadian national standards and certified electrical and electronic products. Later in her career, Suzanne earned her Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree in Boston, MA.

Over the years, she has contributed to five different associations in the electrical, fire, and life safety sectors.

Career Highlights: Suzanne’s Journey in Electrical Engineering, Non-Profit associations, and Leadership

Suzanne has achieved many important milestones in her career, beginning with an education in Electronics Engineering Technology,  working for multiple non-profit associations focused on electrical, fire, and life safety, aligning electrical product safety standards in North America and globally, obtaining an MBA, and excelling in a senior leadership position.

Suzanne’s resilience has been a driving force in overcoming challenges and setbacks throughout her journey. Whether facing difficult decisions, navigating complex projects and programs, or dealing with unexpected obstacles, she has consistently shown the ability to bounce back and adapt to changing circumstances. Her determination and perseverance have not only helped her succeed personally but have also inspired those around her to push through their challenges.

In addition to her resilience, Suzanne’s effective collaboration skills have been instrumental in building strong relationships with colleagues, partners, and stakeholders. Current Strategy and Vision

Currently, Suzanne is working on enhancing CFAA’s Fire Alarm Technology Program. Other key initiatives include implementing a new Association Management System (AMS) to improve operations, exploring national accreditation of CFAA’s Fire Alarm Technology Program, advocating for harmonized codes and standards for fire protection systems across Canada and internationally, seeking regulatory endorsement of CFAA fire alarm technician qualifications and improving the program with new courses and continuing education opportunities. In the next five years,  Suzanne envisions CFAA as the nationally recognized authority on fire alarm-related information, education, qualifications, expertise, and industry support, with active chapters throughout Canada.

Overcoming Obstacles

As a woman in a male-dominated industry, Suzanne has occasionally faced challenges such as unequal treatment, lack of respect for her work experience and ideas, and encountering narcissistic behavior. However, she has remained determined and grateful for the support from many mentors and leaders who have helped her along the way.

Advice for Aspiring Leaders

Suzanne advises aspiring industry leaders to continuously learn and grow by pursuing further education and certifications, as well as gaining more work experience. She insists on taking up new challenges, pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone and not being afraid of failure, as it helps you become more resilient and stronger. Also, to find mentors who can offer guidance, support, and valuable insights as you progress in your career.

Leadership and Advocacy in Fire, Life Safety, and Electrical Sectors: Suzanne Alfano, Executive Director’s Strategic Expertise

Suzanne is a respected leader with a strong background in advocating for the fire, life safety, and electrical/electronics sectors. She excels in developing safety and environmentally- friendly programs that benefit industry, consumers, and government. Suzanne has a unique blend of technical and business skills, allowing her to implement effective business development strategies to boost revenue and secure funding.
