In a recent interview with Jason Chamberlain, the CEO of Tectonix Steel, we delved into his insights on leadership, innovation, and the ever-changing landscape of entrepreneurship. Jason shared valuable perspectives on his personal journey as an entrepreneur and how Tectonix Steel is adapting to the dynamic construction industry. How it all started 

Upon completing his degree and working for a company, he had a revealing conversation with his boss. 

His boss made it clear that, despite his dedication and skills, he would never rise to the top of the company because the boss’s sons were destined for those roles. This setback was a turning point in his life. It was then that he made the pivotal decision to create a company that would provide opportunities based on merit rather than family connections. 

In 2002, Tectonix Steel was born, marking the beginning of an incredible journey that continues to this day, spanning over two decades. Initially, his dream for Tectonix Steel was modest employing 12 people, renting a 1,000–square–foot office space, and achieving $1 million in annual revenue. However, as the company grew, so did his ambitions. Today, Tectonix Steel employs nearly 100 individuals worldwide, with aspirations to reach a workforce of 1,000. 

Tectonix Steel’s innovative approach includes a research and development contest that encourages employees to study various topics of interest.

Jason emphasized the importance of adaptability in both personal and professional life. He highlighted how experiences, knowledge, and even the world itself are in a constant state of change. Being able to adapt to these changes and evolve one’s thinking and strategies is crucial for success. He noted that during the COVID–19 pandemic, many long–standing beliefs about business and leadership became less relevant, requiring individuals and organizations to adjust their perspectives. 

Innovation at Tectonix Steel: 

Jason Chamberlain has fostered a resilient culture that encourages innovation. He shared how they focus on understanding and meeting the unique needs of each employee, creating a sense of belonging and value. Additionally, they promote self–accountability and a culture of accountability, ensuring that responsibilities are clearly communicated, understood, and met. This culture has led to improved teamwork, creativity, and adapt- ability within the organization. 

Tectonix Steel’s innovative approach includes a research and development contest that encourages employees to study various topics of interest. This initiative fosters collaboration and knowledge–sharing among team members. Employees research and report on their findings, and the company rewards the most impactful contributions. This approach not only keeps the team up–to–date with industry trends but also enhances collaboration and builds a sense of importance among employees. 

Thought Leadership 

When asked about his perspective on thought leadership, Jason Chamberlain defined it as a blend of innovation and leadership. According to him, thought leadership involves taking thoughts, ideas, trends, and  people’s interactions and innovating to find new and improved ways of thinking and seeing the world. The leadership aspect comes into play by leading others toward these new thoughts and perspectives, instigating change within organizations, and bringing innovative ideas to the forefront.

The Changing Landscape of Entrepreneurship 

Jason also shared his perspective on the evolving landscape of entrepreneurship. He discussed how the gig economy is gaining prominence, with more individuals seeking independence and flexible work arrangements. Traditional corporate structures are no longer the sole path to success. Instead, smaller, independent gigs and collaborations are becoming prevalent. Jason emphasized the need for leaders to find ways to motivate and incentivize independent contractors effectively. 

Advice for Emerging Leaders and Entrepreneurs 

When asked about advice for emerging leaders and entrepreneurs, Jason offered several valuable insights: Stay adaptable: Always be open to changing trends and find ways to adapt to new circumstances. Collaborate, don’t compete: Instead of viewing others in your field as competitors, consider collaborating with them to achieve shared goals. Focus on the positive: When faced with challenges, look for the positive aspects and opportunities for growth rather than dwelling on the negatives. 

Tectonix Steel’s Future Goals 

Looking ahead, Jason Chamberlain revealed Tectonix Steel’s vision for the future. The company aims to double in size over the next three years, with a focus on creating more jobs and delivering greater value to the industry. They plan to achieve this growth by expanding their customer base and adapting to the changing needs of the construction industry.
