Tale of Inception 

Portman Partners was founded in 2018 by data center veteran Peter Hannaford. Mike joined the business, as Managing Director, in 2022, after almost 30 years of multi discipline industry experience as a service provider covering cabling, fit–out, mechanical and electrical, design and build and maintenance. 

As a seasoned entrepreneur, founder and director, Mike had built, operated, and exited numerous data center services companies and has an established track record of structuring and building successful and cohesive teams globally. 

Mike had been working closely with Peter to secure investment that would take the business to the next stage of its growth and meet the growing demands of an industry that is expanding exponentially worldwide. He decided to make the investment via his family investment firm, Meyer Mundell Limited, that completed the successful acquisition of the Portman in December 2023 to further its plans for the continued expansion of services to the data center and digital infrastructure industry globally.

Proactive Strategies: Redefining the Realm 

Portman Partners excels in global data center executive search and advisory. It prioritizes talent development and future–readiness, but the broader strategies are to focus on its unique set of expertise in recruiting for specific, hard–to–fill roles within the data center industry, requiring in–depth knowledge of the sector and its unique challenges.

Leadership Approach: Navigating Industry Challenges 

Every industry has its own challenges. For data center, Mike points out that talent shortage is a significant challenge as is the rapid growth and scalability, followed by energy consumption and sustainability then data security and privacy, and lastly, evolving technologies. 

They all have a common thread, the industry needs innovative leadership and innovation which Mike believes, will come from cognitive diversity. 

“The industry needs to develop talent earlier by investing in training programs, apprenticeships, and partnerships with educational institutions to create a pipeline of skilled workers,” Mike emphasizes. “It needs to standardise data center design and components to facilitate faster deployment and scalability and focus on utilising renewable energy sources. Companies should implement a zero–trust security model and foster a culture of innovation within the industry, encouraging collaboration.”
