How Does a Well Implemented Safety and Health Program Affect Employee Retention
How Does a Well Implemented Safety and Health Program Affect Employee Retention

The concept of employee retention has evolved radically in the last few decades. In this rapidly evolving workplace environment, where Gen Zs are taking over, the importance of securing this pool of talent has increased dramatically. The modern-day workplace is no longer about work, salaries, and promotions only; it has gradually navigated toward employee health and safety.

Employee well-being as a key to employee satisfaction is now widely recognized by organizations. They are working to design and implement employee safety and health policies and programs to ensure employees are content. Let us learn, how a well-implemented safety and health program affects employee retention.

How Lack of Safety and Health Interventions Can Accelerate Employee Burnout?

(Statista, 2024)

As per a Statista survey in 2023, around 26% of employees in the United States are always feeling burned out at work. Persistent work pressure and poor work-life balance can be the reasons behind employees feeling low or stressed while working.

As per the American Society of Safety Professionals, approximately 15 workers die due to job injuries each day in the country. Harassment, sexual assaults, and workplace gender inequity are some leading causes of women’s employee burnout in America. These statistics unveil the harsh truth of today’s workplace, indicating an absence of proper health and safety interventions in organizations.

A lack of health and safety programs can prove to be disastrous for modern-day companies. Maslow has rightly pointed out the safety needs of employees as a key to employee retention in his theory- ‘Hierarchy of Needs.’ All these are an indication of the need for companies to become more responsible in managing the workforce.

With robust employee safety and health programs, they can responsibly retain talented employees for a longer period of time. As it is said, a happy employee is a loyal employee. These safety and health interventions by companies can ensure employees are happy and engaged in their work.

What is a Safety and Health Program for a Company?

A safety and health program is a set of plans designed to ensure workplace safety and employee health in compliance with Employee laws. The Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 prevents employees from being killed or harmed in any manner. A safety and health program is created in compliance with this law and needs to be implemented successfully to avoid workplace injuries, harassment, and poor employee health. Such programs are purposed to engage and retain employees to increase workplace productivity.

How Does a Well-Implemented Safety and Health Program Affect Employee Retention?

Organizations with a culture that supports the health and safety of employees cultivate a secure and healthy workplace. Employers must ensure employees are satisfied and connected by offering them a workplace they like to work in. Workplace safety is directly proportional to employee engagement, and employee engagement can effectively increase employee retention. Here is how-

1) Valuing Employees as Organizational Assets

A well-implemented safety and health program reflects that the company values its employees as an important organizational asset. This gives employees a sense of belongingness and value that translates into their loyalty towards their companies.

2) Making Employers More Responsible

Having a well-implemented safety and health program in organizational human resource management reflects a responsible image of the employer. By prioritizing employee safety and health, employers not only value them but also enhance their own approach to employee management. A responsible employer is loved and respected by workers, leading to their long-term relationship with the firm.

3) Ensuring all Safety and Health Concerns are Addressed

Employees are likely to stay in a company where all their relevant needs are satisfied. Safety and health, being one of the most crucial rights of employees, are often ignored by companies, leading to high burnout. Ensuring all their safety and health concerns are addressed by a well-implemented program, employers can keep more employees in action.

A well-implemented safety and health program includes- health policies, safety guidelines, and insurance facilities. These work together in alignment with organizational goals to retain more employees and increase organizational performance in return. For larger employers, offering strong benefits like corporate health coverage for large groups can strengthen employee confidence in the organization’s commitment to well-being and support higher long-term retention.
