Spotify, a prominent music streaming platform, is expanding its services to include e-learning content. Initially launching in the UK, this new feature will offer freemium video courses in partnership with companies like the BBC and Skillshare. Users can expect at least two lessons to be free, while the cost of a complete course will range from £20 to £80 on average. The pricing structure is currently being tested for future expansion.

The educational content will be accessible through Spotify’s home and browse tabs under the “Courses” section, as well as on the web and via the mobile app. The course topics will cover a wide range of subjects, from music production to using Excel, and even include lessons on creating online learning lessons for aspiring educators.

As the online learning market is projected to reach over $315 billion in value by 2023, Spotify aims to compete with other educational platforms. However, their focus will be on one-directional, on-demand video courses with supplementary materials in the form of additional documents. The company is yet to reveal any plans for interactive content, gamification, or incorporating tests.

Spotify’s course selection will be curated based on users’ listening habits and search history. The platform will collaborate with third-party publishers, who will own the video content and license it to Spotify. The revenue generated from course purchases will be shared among the creators, publishers, and Spotify. The company has not disclosed the specific revenue split or any potential benefits for existing premium subscribers.
