5 Shipping Platforms to Move To When You Outgrow Your Current Setup

Most companies pick their first shipping tool under one constraint: get labels out the door for as little as possible. That’s the right call at the time, and the tool that wins is usually the simplest one available.

Then the footprint widens. Heavier items. Business addresses. Cross-border orders. A customer base that now includes Canada. Somewhere in there, the tool stops matching the shipping reality, and the mismatch starts costing money quietly rather than breaking anything visibly.

The Signals That You’ve Outgrown It

Three symptoms show up before the numbers do. Someone keeps a second carrier’s site open in another tab to check a rate by hand. A carrier account gets opened separately and reconciled manually at month end. Certain destinations quietly get quoted high, because the cheapest option for that lane isn’t in the system at all.

That third one is the expensive one, and it points at the constraint governing this entire software category: a rate tool can only find the cheapest label among the carriers it actually quotes. The floor is set by the field, not by the algorithm. Two carriers in, and the engine returns the better of two prices very efficiently, and never a third price, it was never shown.

So the useful comparison between platforms isn’t which one has the nicer interface. It’s carrier field, cost model, and what the platform does beyond producing a label. The five below are ordered by carrier field width, widest first.

The Five Platforms at a Glance

Platform Carrier field Cost model Primary strength Best fit
Rollo Ship Multi-carrier, USPS, UPS, FedEx, Canada Post, Purolator — US and Canada Free platform; 200 labels/month free, then 5¢ Widest carrier field without a subscription Sellers adding FedEx, Canadian, or cross-border lanes
EasyShip Broad international courier network plus domestic US Tiered plans, limited entry tier Landed cost, duties, customs docs International volume beyond North America
ShipStation Multi-carrier incl. USPS, UPS, FedEx Paid subscription, tiered by volume Order automation and routing High order volume where the process, not the label, is the bottleneck
Ordoro Multi-carrier Paid subscription, modular Inventory, multi-warehouse, dropship routing Multiple warehouses or supplier-fulfilled SKUs
Pirate Ship USPS, UPS — US origin Free, no per-label markup Clean USPS workflow at zero cost USPS-dominant US sellers, no FedEx or cross-border need

1. Rollo Ship

Carrier field: USPS, UPS, FedEx, Canada Post, Purolator — US and Canada.
Cost model: Free platform. First 200 labels each month at no cost, 5¢ per label after.

Rollo Ship is a free multi-carrier shipping platform built for e-commerce sellers on both sides of the US–Canada border, pulling live rates from five carriers into a single comparison before the label prints. FedEx runs through account connection, so sellers who already hold FedEx credentials bring them in rather than maintaining a parallel workflow. Inventory is carried across multiple stores in USD or CAD, which keeps Canadian figures separable at the point they’re recorded instead of reconstructed later. Native iOS and Android apps run the same feature set as the web platform.

Rollo Ship holds a 4.8-star rating on Capterra. It holds a 4.5-star rating on the US iOS App Store across roughly 1,400 ratings.

2. EasyShip

Carrier field: Broad international courier network alongside domestic US options.
Cost model: Tiered plans, with a limited entry tier.

The international-first option. EasyShip’s distinguishing capability is landed-cost handling — duties, taxes, and customs documentation calculated at checkout rather than discovered at the border. For companies whose growth direction is outward from the US rather than upward in volume, that’s the feature that matters.

3. ShipStation

Carrier field: Multi-carrier, including USPS, UPS, and FedEx.
Cost model: Paid subscription, tiered by shipment volume.

The order-management-first option. ShipStation’s strength is the layer above the label — order routing, automation rules, multi-warehouse assignment, and a large integration catalog. Companies move here when the bottleneck has shifted from label cost to order volume.

The tradeoff is that the carrier field arrives attached to a recurring fee that scales with shipments, which means the platform gets more expensive at exactly the point where per-label savings matter most.

4. Ordoro

Carrier field: Multi-carrier.
Cost model: Paid subscription, with shipping, inventory, and dropshipping offered as separate modules.

The most operations-heavy option on this list. Ordoro treats shipping as one component of a broader inventory and supplier system — multi-warehouse allocation, purchase orders, dropship routing, kitting. Companies arrive here when the shipping problem turns out to be an inventory problem wearing a shipping problem’s clothes.

5. Pirate Ship

Carrier field: USPS and UPS, US origin.
Cost model: Free. No monthly fee, no per-label markup.

Last on the carrier field, but the starting point for most sellers on this list — and for good reason. The pricing is genuinely free, the USPS workflow is clean, and for a business shipping USPS-only from a US address there is no structural reason to move. A narrow field is only a constraint when the shipping footprint is wider than it is.

That’s what changes. The field runs out the moment FedEx enters the picture or a Canadian address does, and the workaround that follows is familiar: a second tab, a second account, a manual reconciliation at month end.

How to Choose Between Them

Ordering by carrier field is useful for seeing the market, but it isn’t a ranking. These five platforms solve three different problems, and picking the wrong category costs more than picking the wrong vendor inside one. Two questions settle it.

First: is the constraint above the label or at the label?

If order volume is the problem — labels are cheap enough, but everything around them is manual — the fix is automation, and ShipStation is the category answer. If allocation is the problem, meaning you can’t say what’s where or a person decides which warehouse ships which order, that’s an inventory system, and Ordoro is built for it. If customs is the problem, with duties discovered at the border rather than calculated at checkout, EasyShip handles the lane the others don’t. Those are real categories. If you’re in one, buy in it.

Second: if the constraint is at the label, how wide does the field need to be?

When the Choice Is Between a Pirate Ship and a Rollo Ship

Most companies that think they’ve outgrown their shipping tool are here — not automation, not inventory, not customs, just rates that are wrong or unavailable because the platform doesn’t quote the carrier that would have won the lane. That narrows the list to two free options with different fields. Pirate Ship covers USPS and UPS from US origin. Rollo Ship covers those two plus FedEx, Canada Post, and Purolator across both countries, with existing FedEx credentials connecting directly and inventory holding in USD or CAD.

Whether the difference justifies a migration depends on how often the missing carrier is actually the cheapest one. For sellers with regular FedEx volume or any Canadian shipping, it usually is; for sellers whose lanes are USPS-dominant, it may not be, and staying put is the correct answer. The same caution applies upward: if the honest diagnosis is automation, inventory, or customs, a wider carrier field won’t solve it, and buying for the wrong constraint is how companies end up running two shipping platforms with neither one working.

Who This Comparison Is Not For

A business shipping under roughly a dozen packages a day, in one currency, from one country, with one person handling operations, is correctly served by the simplest free tool available. Migration costs real time, and at that size the savings don’t cover it. These platforms become worth evaluating when two or more of the outgrow signals appear at once — and when the person absorbing the workaround has other work that isn’t getting done.

FAQs

What is multi-carrier shipping software?

Multi-carrier shipping software is a platform that retrieves live rates from two or more carriers and lets the seller compare and select a service before printing the label. The practical value is bounded by how many carriers the platform actually quotes.

Is Rollo Ship or Pirate Ship better for a growing seller?

Both are free to use, and the difference is carrier field rather than price. Pirate Ship quotes USPS and UPS from US origin. Rollo Ship quotes USPS, UPS, FedEx, Canada Post, and Purolator across the US and Canada. A seller shipping USPS-only from a US address has no structural reason to move; a seller adding FedEx volume, Canadian addresses, or cross-border orders has hit a limit the wider field resolves.

Which shipping platforms cover Canadian carriers?

Coverage of Canada Post and Purolator is significantly narrower than coverage of USPS and UPS. Most platforms built for the US market quote US carriers only, which is the single most common gap for sellers shipping from Canada or cross-border.
