eye care

Most managers know the signs of a tiring workday: employees rubbing their eyes during meetings, struggling to focus in the afternoon, or taking frequent breaks because their screens feel uncomfortable after hours of use.

Workplace wellness programs have traditionally focused on areas like ergonomic chairs, standing desks, mental health support, and fitness benefits. While these initiatives are valuable, one important area often receives less attention: eye health.

For many employees, screens are the centre of their working day. Whether they are responding to emails, analyzing data, attending video meetings, or managing projects, many professionals spend most of their working hours looking at a display. Over time, poor lighting, uncomfortable screen settings, and outdated prescriptions can contribute to eye strain, headaches, and reduced concentration.

The good news is that companies do not need to redesign their offices or invest in expensive equipment to support better eye health. Small changes in workplace habits, office setup, and employee benefits can make a noticeable difference.

Here are five practical ways businesses can create a more eye-friendly workplace without changing how their teams operate.

Audit the Lighting Before Making Bigger Changes

Lighting is one of the easiest workplace factors to overlook because employees often adapt to uncomfortable conditions without realizing they are affecting their productivity.

Harsh overhead lights, screen glare, and poor contrast between a monitor and its surroundings can make the eyes work harder throughout the day. Over several hours, this can contribute to discomfort and fatigue.

Before investing in major office upgrades, businesses should start with a simple lighting review. Check how the workspace looks at different times of the day, especially when natural sunlight changes.

Small adjustments can often solve common problems. Moving desks or monitors away from direct window glare, adding desk lamps in darker areas, or using diffusers on overly bright overhead lights can create a more comfortable environment without replacing the entire lighting system.

A short workplace lighting assessment can reveal simple fixes that improve comfort for employees almost immediately.

Create Better Screen Habits Across the Team

Many employees adjust their screen settings based on personal preference, but those choices are not always the best for long-term comfort.

A monitor that is too bright compared with the surrounding room, text that is too small, or a screen positioned incorrectly can increase eye fatigue during long working sessions. The problem is that employees rarely receive guidance on how to optimize their setup.

Companies can address this by creating simple screen-use recommendations for employees. This does not need to become a complicated policy. A short internal guide covering monitor brightness, text size, screen positioning, and regular visual breaks can be enough.

The twenty-twenty-twenty rule is one example of a simple habit employees can adopt: every 20 minutes, spend 20 seconds looking at something about 20 feet away. While it sounds small, these short breaks help reduce the amount of continuous close-up focus required during screen-heavy work.

Including these recommendations in employee onboarding can also help new team members start with healthier habits from their first day.

Make Prescription Eyewear Easier to Access

Not every case of workplace eye strain comes from lighting or screen habits. Sometimes, the issue is simply that employees are working with an outdated prescription or using glasses that are not suited to their daily tasks.

Many companies already offer vision benefits, but employees often do not use them. Some delay eye examinations because they are too busy, while others avoid replacing their glasses because the process feels expensive or inconvenient.

Businesses can improve this by making vision benefits easier to understand and use. Clear communication about available coverage, reimbursement options, and eyewear choices can remove some of the barriers employees face.

For example, employees who need new frames can order glasses online through trusted retailers, making the process more convenient and easier to fit around a busy schedule.

Helping employees maintain an up-to-date prescription is a simple step that can have a bigger impact than many workplace adjustments because it directly addresses whether their vision correction is working properly.

Encourage Breaks That Actually Happen

Most employees understand that taking breaks from screens is important. The challenge is that busy schedules often make those breaks difficult to follow consistently.

A calendar filled with back-to-back meetings leaves little room for employees to step away from their screens. Even when people know they should take a short break, deadlines and workplace expectations often encourage them to continue working.

Managers can help by making short breaks part of the team culture. This could mean ending meetings a few minutes early, avoiding unnecessary back-to-back calls, or encouraging employees to step away from their desks during lunch.

The goal is not to create more rules. It is to create a working environment where employees have realistic opportunities to rest their eyes during the day.

Small changes in how teams organize their schedules can make healthy habits much easier to maintain.

Make Annual Eye Exams Part of Workplace Wellness

Many employees only think about their eyesight when they notice a problem. The challenge is that vision changes often happen gradually, meaning people may not realize their prescription is no longer suitable until they experience discomfort.

Companies can encourage better eye health by making annual eye examinations a visible part of their wellness communication.

This can be as simple as reminding employees about available vision benefits, sharing information during wellness initiatives, or allowing reasonable flexibility for appointments.

For remote and hybrid teams, communication becomes even more important. Without daily office interactions, employees may be less likely to hear reminders about benefits they already have access to.

A simple annual reminder can help employees take action before small vision issues become bigger sources of discomfort.

Conclusion

Protecting employees’ eye health does not require a complete workplace transformation. In most cases, the biggest improvements come from small adjustments that make everyday work more comfortable.

Better lighting, healthier screen habits, easier access to vision care, regular breaks, and reminders about eye examinations can all contribute to a more sustainable working environment.

For business leaders, supporting eye health is another way to invest in employee wellbeing. When teams can work comfortably and maintain focus throughout the day, both employees and organizations benefit.
